Angela Laughingheart invites fathers and their children aged 9 and up to try a little tai chi in the garden. Learn the eight basic stances of Tai Chi, Stepping Patterns and a two-person drill. The soft and safe repetitive movements of Tai Chi help you recognize and achieve balance and mind/body presence. Working with a friend or parent is a wonderful bonding experience that builds trust and partnership.

Drop into the studio to make beads from recycled paper to string into necklaces, chains, and ornaments. Once you learn, you'll be able to make your own beads at home.

Learn how to grind pulp and create beautiful handmade paper using a variety of textures and colors. We will be making stationery-sized sheets and one large piece that can incorporate collaged elements. You are welcome to bring cotton cloth from your old clothes and linens--no T-shirts, please--cut into half-inch squares to beat into pulp, as well as scraps of lace, ribbons, yarn, string, plant material and anything else you might like to work into your paper.

No experience required. Bring a bag lunch and beverages and dress appropriately for outdoor papermaking (we have aprons, but please wear clothes suitable for artmaking).

Shibori is an ancient Japanese resist-dye technique that involves creasing, folding, binding, and knotting to create beautiful patterns. In this workshop, you'll begin by making the dyes (some of them sourced from your own kitchen or garden), and will then learn the basics of Shibori to make a scarf or set of striking tea towels.

Bring a bag lunch and beverages and dress for the outdoors. We’ll be making use of Lynden’s 40 beautiful acres during our breaks, and dyeing fabric outside, weather permitting. We have aprons, but please wear clothes suitable for artmaking.

About Jamie Lea Bertsch

Jamie Lea Bertsch is a maker. Whether itʼs creating pattern, knitting, arranging flowers, or experimenting with natural dyes—making by hand is her favorite thing to do. She swoons over combinations of color, texture and pattern. Bertsch received her MFA in Fibers from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a BFA in Graphic Design and Printmaking from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. She has traveled abroad, teaching art in Mae Sai, Thailand. Her design work has been featured in Domino Magazine and Wisconsin Bride, and she has shown her work at Lillstreet Gallery in Chicago and the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The Lynden Sculpture Garden remains open until 7:30 pm on Wednesdays during the summer months. It's a beautiful time to see the garden, to enjoy a picnic on the grounds, and to take a stroll. We would like more people to enjoy these evenings at Lynden, so on July 22 we're hosting our 2nd annual Midsummer Saturnalia which includes some inducements- an astronomy talk, planet gazing, plus some treats (Transit of Venus cookies anyone?)--to lure you out on a Wednesday night. We'll be looking at our Moon, Saturn, the Great Globular Cluster in Hercules, and the Ring Nebula in Lyra.

Bring picnics (we'll provide dessert), telescopes, and your eyes and ears (and don't worry if you don't have a telescope, Rob will provide a 11" Schmidt-Cassegrain, like the one pictured below).

6-8 pm: Picnic
Pack a picnic and pick a spot on the grass, or a place at one of our picnic tables. Stroll the grounds, relax by the Big Lake, get to know a sculpture.

8-9 pm: Orientation to the Night Sky: What You'll Be Seeing with Robert Powell

9-10:30 pm: Planet Gazing

About Robert Powell

Robert Powell is an amateur astronomer and member of the Northern Cross Science Foundation, an astronomy outreach organization in Milwaukee's North Shore. In 2003, he was one of six people in Wisconsin to be appointed to NASA's Saturn Observation Campaign. The international outreach program of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory was designed to engage youth in the excitement of astronomy.

At Lynden, we think of bonsai as one of the most intriguing intersections of art and nature. This is why we have previously joined with the Milwaukee Bonsai Society to host some of their exhibitions and informal showings of bonsai. We are delighted to be able to offer a series of hands-on workshops that will introduce parents and children and teens and to the art of bonsai.

A bonsai is a living sculpture, changing from day to day, season to season, and year to year. Because it is never finished, it celebrates all of nature: its cycles, its harshness, its resilience, its balance. Creating and caring for a bonsai combines the principles of design with the science of horticulture; it develops an appreciation for the world of trees and the world of three-dimensional artmaking.

In this hands-on workshop, you will work one-on-one with an experienced bonsai teacher to learn the basic principals and techniques of bonsai design, creating your own bonsai from tropical material and transplanting it into a ceramic bonsai container to take home.
