Senior Grounds Manager Bob Retko and Algae

I’m taking a quick break from Slow Food blogging to announce another upcoming event at Lynden, an Algae Harvest on Saturday, October 16th, from 1-3 pm. If you’ve been following this blog, you’ll know that the Little Lake, one of the three bodies of water here at the garden, has a good deal of algae in it, due to reasons Senior Grounds Manager Bob Retko explained awhile back. We are draining the Little Lake the week of October 11, and by Saturday we should have a nice crop of dried algae to harvest. Algae may be used to make paper or for compost (there’s a good description of how to compost it here: http://www.gardenguides.com/96546-compost-pond-algae.html). Do you have other uses for pond algae? Let us know.

Bring your knee boots (it will be mucky in the pond), your forks or rakes, and a basket or container for hauling the algae away. First come, first served!
