2022 Fall Session (begins September 13): Tuesdays, 10:30 am-11:30 am

Tuesdays in the Garden, designed for children aged 1-3, provides a nurturing environment where children’s curiosity and wonder are extended through play and exploration, and children and their caregivers learn and discover side-by-side. Join art educators Claudia Orjuela and Denice Niebuhr for hands-on art making and all-senses-engaged exploration of the outdoor world at Lynden. We’ll consider different themes, each designed to connect Lynden’s environment with children’s interests. We will encourage experimentation and the manipulation of art and natural materials to tell stories, solve problems, and develop relationships. Masks required indoors for adults and children ages 2 and up. Social distancing will be practiced at all times. To view our Guidelines for Parent-and-Child, Youth Workshops, click here.

Fee: $16/$12 members for one adult and one child.
Registration: Group size is limited; advance registration is required. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration does not guarantee admission. Once we receive your completed registration form, we will follow up via e-mail with an invoice for payment – or a notification that you've been added to the waitlist – and a confirmation after payment is received. Join birder Chuck Stebelton the second Sunday of each month (except October, when the walk is on the third Sunday) for a small-group, socially distanced bird walk on the grounds. Keeping to the perimeter of the garden, we’ll watch for seasonal migrants and resident bird species and seek out the best bird habitats to identify as many species as we can. Please dress for the weather and plan to walk in varied terrain. Bring your binoculars if you have them; no previous birding experience required.

About the Artist

Chuck Stebelton is author of An Apostle Island (Oxeye Press, forthcoming) and two previous full-length collections of poetry. As a birder and Wisconsin Master Naturalist volunteer he has offered interpretive hikes for conservancy groups and arts organizations including Friends of Cedarburg Bog, Milwaukee Audubon Society, Woodland Pattern Book Center, Friends of Lorine Niedecker, and the Lynden Sculpture Garden. NOURISH_SBLW

Nourish: The Soil
Join artist-in-residence Jenna Knapp and collaborator Sevan Arabajian for an evening of full moon nourishment. The full moon is a time for releasing and cleansing so we can promote growth in our lives. Just as the garden is illuminated differently under a full moon, so are any obstacles or interferences that are keeping us from our dreams. In their second collaboration of the season, Jenna and Sevan will guide you through an evening of metaphorical tilling and symbolic fertilizing so you can nourish your dreams, desires, and delights. First, Sevan will lead participants through a sound journey to help illuminate any obstacles or interferences in our lives. Once we recognize our blocks, it becomes easier to let go of what is no longer serving us. Enjoying that space as it starts to clear, Jenna will lead a labyrinth walk where participants will be invited to nurture the garden itself by casting fertilizer: taking care of the land, as it holds us in our healing.

Sound baths are an ancient form of healing and deep meditation; they include various ambient sounds playing in a space where you can hear and feel their vibrations. Your sound healer for the evening will be Milwaukee’s own Sevan Arabajian, initiated by Akhilanka of the Temple of Singing Bowls in Mysore, India, when he was traveling in the U.S.

The sound bath lasts approximately 45-60 minutes. We recommend arriving 15 minutes ahead of time to give yourself time to set up and prepare. Please bring something to rest on and to cover yourself with (if you think you’ll want that) for the duration, and dress appropriately for the weather. A little insect repellent may be in order, too. Fertilizer will be provided in cups for easy casting in the labyrinth.

The HOME Refugee Steering Committee at the Lynden Sculpture Garden invites you to observe WORLD REFUGEE DAY in a series of outdoor events and programs that celebrate Milwaukee's refugee communities through art, food, fashion, and performance.

For HOME Music Day, emcee Moe Aung, of the Burmese communities, welcomes back returning bands include Congo Gospel Music Band (Congolese), Golden Melody Music Band U.S.A (Burmese), and Samba Da Vida MKE (Afro-Brazilian percussion) and some new participants including Martin Classic (Afrobeat and Bongo Flava) and C&K Music Band (Chin and Karen).

Burmese food will be available for donation to the grassroots efforts for the Myanmar democracy movement (so don’t forget to bring cash!).

PROGRAM
12 pm - Golden Melody Music Band U.S.A. (Burmese)
1 pm - C&K Music Band (Chin & Karen)
2 pm - Martin Classic (Afrobeat and Bongo Flava)
3 pm - Samba Da Vida (Afro-Brazilian percussion)
3:30 pm – Congo Gospel Music Band (Congolese)
Program and timing are subject to change.

Golden Melody Music Band U.S.A. (Burmese) is led by Burmese Muslim Mohammad Hasan alongside volunteer singers and managed by Burmese grassroots community worker Moe Aung. Hasan captures his audience with a nostalgic style and persona, both poised and enigmatic, and with sounds of yesteryear. He plays international music, oldies, and classic rock songs in Myanmar, English and Hindi (Bollywood). Hasan and his rotating band members perform at farmers’ markets, community fundraisers, and practically anywhere that they are called for. At the Lynden Sculpture Garden, Golden Melody has performed at HOME celebrations since 2019. In 2021, inspired by community activism and the Spring Revolution in his homeland and locally, Hasan advised and arranged music for the Spring Star Music Band consisting of musicians from the Karen, Kachin, Chin, and Burmese community.

C&K Music Band (Chin & Karen) was founded in 2020 by Saw Klo Futurestar and Kyaw Mu. Kyaw Mu now leads the band of music lovers from both the Chin and Karen community in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They enjoy performing varied genres of music but are most inclined to rock and heavy metal.

Martin Classic (Afrobeat and Bongo Flava) is a Bongo Flava singer-songwriter from Tanzania. Martin found his love for music at a very young age. He started off singing in church choirs, and in his early teens was part of a small group. In 2016, Martin and his family resettled to the United States as refugees. In 2018, Martin released his first solo single called Twaendana along with a music video on his YouTube channel. The song created some buzz for him in the Congolese and Tanzanian communities in America. He gained a following and started performing around the United States. His follow up single, Natetema, was a hit within the African community as well. It was played at African weddings and loved by many. In 2021, Martin released his first EP, a collaboration with artist and life partner Maggie Bushiri, which naturally took the African community by storm. The EP did exceptionally well both on YouTube and on many other digital platforms. Martin has collaborated with other Bongo Flava artists who are household names within the community, including Aslay, Kusah, and more. Martin Classic is currently working on his first solo album, which he plans to release next year.

Milwaukee’s own Brazilian Samba school since 2010 and part of the International Grooversity drumming network spearheaded by Marcus Santos (Grooversity.com), Samba Da Vida MKE (Afro-Brazilian percussion) brings together people of all ages to celebrate the Afro-Brazilian and Carnaval traditions of Salvador da Bahia, Rio, and São Paulo. Directed by Julio Pabón and Bony Plog-Benavides, SDV MKE is featured in parades and performances throughout greater Milwaukee and focuses on maintaining and promoting the rich musical culture of Brazil. https://www.facebook.com/SambadaVidaMKE/

Based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Congo Gospel Music Band (Congolese) is led and organized by drummer and frontliner Bodack Mondembe. Based at their local church, Congo Gospel Music Band also performs at street and neighborhood events, churches and weddings, and community-led events. They have performed at Beet Street, the annual Fall Harvest Festival by Cactus Club, Friends of Zion worship concert at Benediction Lutheran Church, as well as at HOME World Refugee Day celebrations at the Lynden Sculpture Garden. Their album and music video is forthcoming, and their sound, described as rhythmical, upbeat and infectious, is in high demand.

gardenhours

FREE

Artist-In-residence Jenna Knapp views the labyrinth as a physical representation of the kinds of spaces that she also holds in her coaching practice. The center becomes a place for not only individual reflection but an opportunity for connection and conversation with the community. During Garden Hours you can find Knapp at the center of the labyrinth (or up on the hill depending on the intensity of the sun) where she lends a listening ear to those who would like to be heard. Walk the labyrinth and set down some of your burdens, share your secrets with someone, or verbalize the dreams you haven't yet brought yourself to say out loud. Insight available upon request. Or just enjoy the charged energy of a shared space, at the center of a winding path.

The Lynden/HOME Refugee Steering Committee book discussion group, moderated by Lynden’s Kim Khaira, is for those interested in firsthand accounts of displacement. We consider works of non-fiction and fiction, including autobiographical and semi-autobiographical works, by writers who have faced or are facing forced displacement as refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants. Where stories of persecution, historical trauma, and loss of livelihood are effortlessly conveyed by storytellers, journalists, and humanitarians who search out or stumble upon the lives of refugees, we seek out the words of those to whom these stories belong: the narrators who are the closest to their own stories, and the stories of their people, friends, family and, of course, refugees. In May, we will be embarking on a new book, Homeira Qaderi’s Dancing in the Mosque, translated by Zaman Stanizai. Newcomers welcome!

Dancing in the Mosque is an inspiring memoir about one mother’s unimaginable choice in the face of oppression and abuse in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. Devastating in its power, Dancing in the Mosque is a mother’s searing letter to a son she was forced to leave behind. In telling her story—and that of Afghan women—Homeira challenges you to reconsider the meaning of motherhood, sacrifice, and survival. Her story asks you to consider the lengths you would go to protect yourself, your family, and your dignity.

Dr. Homeira Qaderi is a women’s rights activist originally from Afghanistan. She has published six books in Afghanistan and Iran, some of which have received prestigious awards. Dancing in the Mosque is her first book in English.

We encourage you to read each section in advance (see information below on acquiring the current book). Then join us for a virtual discussion moderated by Lynden’s Kim Khaira. The group meets monthly, and we seek the input of group members on titles to consider in the future.

As part of our HOME work at Lynden, we are making the book available without charge to book discussion group participants. If you would like us to purchase a copy of the book for you, please indicate this when completing the registration form. We will contact you when the book is available and you will be able to pick it up at the Lynden Sculpture Garden, 2145 West Brown Deer Road, Milwaukee, WI 53217.

If you prefer to support your local public library by borrowing the book, you can find Milwaukee County libraries here or other local libraries here. If you would like to purchase the book yourself, Boswell Books will be offering it at a 10% discount to book group participants. The book can be purchased at the store (you will find it among the book club selections) or on the Boswell website with the 10% book club discount already applied. We will post that link as soon as we have it. Please check Boswell’s website to check the availability of the book, and to confirm hours and delivery options.

At our July Dog Day, artist Sarah Gail Luther will make you a one-of-a-kind Shrinky Dink charm from a drawing of your dog. This one requires a little patience. Plan on walking around or picnicking for about an hour while Sarah makes your charm. First, she will photograph your dog, then use the photo to make a sketch on polystyrene, and finally she’ll work the Shrinky Dink magic (invented in Brookfield, according to Wikipedia).

About Sarah Gail Luther
Sarah Gail Luther is a Milwaukee-based artist who lovingly explores and documents the familiar, the average, or the forgotten. The results of these inquiries is always a little different, but often they manifest in drawings, performances, public events, or distributable objects. Her work strives to build an understanding of its subject, not necessarily to elevate it, but to appreciate its intricacies, humor, or humanity.

Take some time out of your week to relax into a healing sound bath and identify your intention for this new beginning. Then, physically plant your intentions in the native Wisconsin prairie by participating in a meditative seed walk where you'll support the growth of the labyrinth's walls with your powerful intentions.

The sound bath takes place on a hill so please consider comfortable footwear as well. A little insect repellent may be in order, too. Seeds from the native plants growing in the labyrinth will be provided for you to cast into the walls of the labyrinth on the walk.

Chin youth of Milwaukee come together as the Chin Youth Dancers to perform Chin traditional dances. They are taught by Thla Chum, an experienced Chin dance instructor. The Chin are most known for their bamboo dance, called Ruakhuatlak in Hakha-Chin. Ruakhuatlak is traditionally performed using bamboo or an alternative wood that provides a steady beat by striking and sliding pieces against each other. The dancers hop over and in between the area created by the moving bamboo sticks to showcase the Chin folk dances. The Chin Youth Dancers will also perform different folk dances, generally called Lai lam, that tell stories of the Chin people and their farming lifestyle.

Tessy Sheidun and Friends is a dance group created by Rwandan Tessy Sheidun. A new but already-known face on the Milwaukee scene, by day Sheidun works in various public health and engagement positions, and by night she can be found offering further connection to the community through her expert emceeing skills and dance background. Tessy Sheidun and Friends bring a festive and colorful atmosphere to any event– an experience not to be missed.

Cyenthia Vijayakumar is a Kathak dancer from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the artistic director of Aarambh – Indian Dance School, established in February 2019. Kathak is a North Indian classical dance form composed of rhythmic footwork, elegant stances, graceful movements and swift pirouettes. For Dance Day, Vijayakumar will perform a technical piece that is set on a 16-beat rhythmic cycle, followed by an interactive learning session for participants of all ages. Vijayakumar received intensive training in the Kathak dance style of Lucknow Gharana from Guru Murari Sharan Gupta and Gurus Hari and Chetna from Bangalore, India. She is currently training under Guru Sujatha Banerjee of London. With many accolades to her name, she was awarded the Sashimani Devadasi Yuva Pratibha Puraskar at the 2018 Devadasi International dance festival in Bhubaneswar, India, and the Nritya Shiromani Award at the 2018 Cuttack Mahotsav in Cuttack, India. She has performed extensively in India and the USA. She is also a 2018 IndianRaga Fellow.

Mekdes Woldemariam was born and raised in Ethiopia in a city called Bahir Dar, which literally translates to “by the lake.” She is a proud Ethiopian, a nation that has over 80 ethnic groups and over 90 different languages. For Woldemariam's performance, she has selected four different traditional ethnic dances: Gonder, Tigrinya, Gurage, and Gojjam.

The K.O.G Dancers are a Tanzanian and Congolese group of performers based in Iowa. They travel across the Midwest performing at weddings and other events. They perform to Afro Pop and Congolese music.

The Afghan Women's Dance Group is presented by Khatera Nazari from Afghanistan. She leads a group of Afghan students who fled to Milwaukee after the 2021 Taliban takeover. She is a lover of the arts as they connect with humanity's earliest civilizations and their developments. In Nazari's words, "I grew up in a country that may have limits for women, but we are stronger than our limitations." Her group will perform traditional dance that expresses ideas and emotions about women's rights and the situation of women in Afghanistan. As a young leader, Nazari believes that human rights are a birthright and are fundamental to all people's lives. She aims to use any opportunity to help women from her country through education and the arts, including poetry and dance.

Margurite Bushiri, known as Maggie Bushiri, is a Congolese-born American rapper, songwriter, and actress. She was born in Congo but raised in Tanzania and Mozambique. Maggie and her family lived in Tanzania for 6 years and eventually made their way to the United States as refugees when she was 9 years old. She settled in Salt Lake City, Utah; moved to Minnesota, where she found her creative light through dancing and acting; pursued her acting career in Los Angeles; and has since lived on-and-off in Milwaukee. She earned public attention after releasing her first single, Fly Like That, in late 2016. She later released her second single, Swing Your Body. For HOME Dance Day, Maggie Bushiri will perform Afro-Pop music in English and Swahili with her troupe of dancers, representing both East and West Africa.

Presented by Hanan Refugee Relief Group, Al-Ghurba Dabke Dance Group is a Palestinian folklore dance troupe established in Milwaukee in 2019 by a number of talented performers. The aim of the group is to express the spirit of Arab/Palestinian folklore and culture through a combination of traditional and modern dance. After their performance, Al-Ghurba Dabke Group will invite the audience to join in a hands-on session to learn a traditional form of line dance.
