This comprehensive two-day workshop focuses on Sloyd, or slöjd, the Scandinavian handcraft movement that emphasizes practical, everyday items made from natural materials. Practicing Sloyd promotes self-sufficiency and an intimate knowledge of local natural resources, resulting in handmade functional items like spoons, bowls, cups, buttons, coat hooks, and furniture.

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced carver, this workshop will guide you safely and effectively through the essential steps to carve a wooden spoon from greenwood using traditional axe and knife-hold techniques.

On the first day, you will master essential axe and knife techniques. The second day includes hollowing the bowl with a hook knife, finishing techniques and recommendations for protective oil finishes.

All greenwood materials are included in the workshop. We’ll provide a set of carving tools, though you are welcome to bring your own. Please dress for the outdoors, pack your own lunch for breaks and consider bringing sunscreen and bug repellent, as necessary, and a camp chair for added comfort.

Upon completion, you’ll have the knowledge to continue carving independently, or you can join our Greenwood Gatherings.

Lynden’s carving tool kit supports independent makers:
Sloyd carving knife. Morakniv 106 - Sweden
Spoon Hook Carver from Deepwood Ventures – Minnesota, USA
Small Carver Axe 01 from Kathoff Axes – Sweden

To mark the acquisition and installation of James Rosati’s Double Arc I at Lynden Sculpture Garden, Jonathan D. Lippincott will discuss the history of Rosati’s long and prolific collaboration with the art fabricator Lippincott, Inc. Founded in 1966 by Donald Lippincott and Roxanne Everett, the company was the first of its kind, dedicated exclusively to working with artists to realize large-scale sculpture. The studio transformed how monumental artworks could be fabricated, with a roster of artists including Clement Meadmore, Claes Oldenburg, Nancy Graves, Ellsworth Kelly, Marisol, Robert Murray, Louise Nevelson, and Barnett Newman, among many others. Jonathan explores the company’s founding, its partnership-based business model, and the collaboration, creativity, and material expertise that flourished at the Lippincott workshop.
