Fall Stargazing with Robert Powell

Wednesday, October 15, 2014 - 7-8:30 pm

Jenny Elsner at the SCT

Free to members or with admission to the sculpture garden.

Join amateur astronomer Robert Powell for another evening of stargazing at Lynden. We will begin with a brief talk at 7 pm that introduces the principles of the telescope, advice on borrowing and buying telescopes, and a few of Rob's favorite astronomy books. At 7:30 pm we will move outdoors for a look at Neptune and Jupiter, the Ring Nebula, the Great Globular Cluster and, if the light pollution isn't too bad, the Andromeda Galaxy.

You are welcome to bring your own telescope, but don't worry if you don't have one--Rob will provide a 11" Schmidt-Cassegrain or 13" Newtonian telescope. Dress appropriately for the outdoors.

About Robert Powell

Robert Powell is an amateur astronomer and member of the Northern Cross Science Foundation, an astronomy outreach organization in Milwaukee's North Shore. In 2003, he was one of six people in Wisconsin to be appointed to NASA's Saturn Observation Campaign. The international outreach program of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory was designed to engage youth in the excitement of astronomy.

Ceramic Handbuilding: Porcelain Bowls

Monday, November 10, 2014 - 10 am-4 pm

A Workshop with Linda Wervey Vitamvas

Handbuilding Workshops with Linda Wervey Vitamvas

Fee: $85/ $75 members (all materials included)

Registration: Registration is closed. Sign up for our e-list for information on upcoming workshops.

Working in clay is deeply satisfying, and making pottery allows one to explore aesthetics and function simultaneously. In this workshop we will take the bowl from start to finish, using porcelain as our clay material. We will learn three simple techniques: coiling, pinching, and using a slump mold. To finish, we will embellish our three bowl forms with surface decoration using texturing techniques and brushwork. The pots will then be fired with a clear glaze to protect the surface and make them functional.

Bring a bag lunch and beverages and dress for studio work as well as the outdoors. We’ll be making use of Lynden’s 40 beautiful acres during our breaks, weather permitting.

You will need to return at a later date to pick up your pots.

Working in clay is deeply satisfying, and making pottery allows one to explore aesthetics and function simultaneously. In Trays, Tiles, and Trivets we will work with porcelain slabs. The focus will be on different surface decoration techniques such as stencils, image transfer, various carving methods, and adding underglazes for color. With changes in scale and minor additions our flat designs will magically turn into functional trays, tiles and trivets. Bring textures and objects to press into the clay as well as images and designs that you would like to see take form on your pieces. They will then be fired and finished with a clear glaze to protect the surface and make them functional. Those attending more than one workshop will find plenty to do each time.

Bring a bag lunch and beverages and dress for studio work as well as the outdoors. We’ll be making use of Lynden’s 40 beautiful acres during our breaks, weather permitting.

You will need to return at a later date to pick up your pieces.

The warm glow of an illuminated paper lamp is magical and comforting. Choosing from a variety of handmade papers and gathered natural materials, each student will construct a simple, beautiful, fully functional lamp. Basic lamp wiring will be taught as part of this course, and all materials are provided.

About David Moss

David Moss is a physician and artist who has been making lamps out of paper and natural materials for more than 15 years. He has been an invited artist at the Mallard Island Individual Artist Retreat in Rainy Lake, Minnesota. He is enchanted by the alchemy that transforms ordinary paper into an object of glowing beauty with a flip of a switch. Over the years, his lampmaking practice has developed in two directions. One is the zen-like pursuit of simplicity, resulting in healing lamps that he gives away. The other is the creation of one-of-a kind table and floor lamps, sconces, and large illuminated sculptures.

Give the gift of the sculpture garden--or at least a tiny bit of it. Holiday season is upon us and we will be making terrariums—miniature environments— that will recall warmer seasons when displayed on your windowsill. Choose among small glass bottles and vials to create your own unique, hand-made gift. Select dried materials that require no attention or construct a living terrarium that will grow with your care. (Note that living terrariums require at least 8 hours of indirect sunlight and water 3-5 times a week.) Package your windowsill garden with a Lynden membership for a gift that lasts all year long.
