4th Annual Winter Carnival

Fee: Free to members or with admission to the sculpture garden. Prices for nonmembers: $9 general admission and $7 students & seniors. Kids under 6 are free. Family passes for nonmembers will be available at the door for $20.

Lynden welcomes winter with a day of outdoor art-making, studio projects, tree-walks, ice skating (if the ice permits), bird watching, cloud watching, and whatever other winter activities the weather permits. This year's carnival is curated by Braden Baer, and features visiting artist Claire Ashley with an Interactive Sculptural Event. Filmmaker Wes Tank will be leading a guerilla movie-making activity, scripting and shooting a film on the Lynden grounds in 2 hours; artist-in-residence Pegi Christiansen will be creating a Winter Forest in Brian Nigus's Sightseer, with a bonfire to follow; and we'll be making a site-specific work conceived by artist Roy Staab. We're glad to have Davey Tree Expert back on board both as Winter Carnival sponsors and for a winter tree climbing demonstration. Plus, indoor and outdoor art and nature activities, projects by Paul Druecke's Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design students, and outdoor games, including capture the flag and a badminton tournament. The Gouda Girls food truck will be on hand all day serving hot sandwiches, soups, beverages and more. Keep your eye on this page: we'll be updating it with additional details.

We invite willing participants of all ages to come and dance inside large painted inflatables made by Claire Ashley. Participants can choose to create their own free form moves inside some of the smaller sculptures, or learn a simple choreographed line dance, taught to participants by the artist, for dancing in the largest forms. The performances will take place throughout the day on Saturday, February 7, 2015.

Claire Ashley received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (Chicago, IL), and her BFA from Gray’s School of Art (Aberdeen, Scotland). Originally from Edinburgh, Scotland, Ashley is now Chicago based. Currently, she teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the Department of Contemporary Practices, and the Department of Painting and Drawing. She is represented by Galleri Urbane Marfa + Dallas, TX, and RÖR Contemporary, Miami, FL.

Ashley’s recent work investigates inflatables as painting, sculpture, installation and performance costume. These works have been exhibited nationally and internationally in galleries, museums, and site-specific installations, performances and collaborations. http://claireashley.com

ALL DAY: SCULPTURE SCAVENGER HUNT
Naturalist Naomi Cobb & Graduate Fellow Anna Grosch invite families and small groups to participate in a Sculpture Scavenger Hunt. Can you decode the clues, complete the challenges, and find and interact with six sculptures across the grounds? Challenge your skills of observation and creativity. Silly prizes await!

10 AM-3 PM: PEGI CHRISTIANSEN'S WINTER FOREST
Lynden artist-in-residence Pegi Christiansen will be creating a Winter Forest inside Brian Nigus's sculpture Sightseer. The forest will be made of logs, wild weeds, and other items collected at Lynden during the fall.

10 AM-1 PM: BIRDS OF LYNDEN
Drop by the art studio for a paper puppet project inspired by Lynden's participation in the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Project FeederWatch. Make one of three birds commonly found at Lynden using cut paper and decorative materials. Then, put your puppet in action outside at the Naturalist table, where you'll learn more about observing wildlife at Lynden. Stop by the back feeder to do some birdwatching of your own. See how many varieties you can spot! We'll provide the binoculars and bird guides. This activity is designed as a drop-in and is open to all ages (young children may need parental assistance).

10:30 AM: TREE WALK WITH SHARON MORISSEY
Join Sharon Morrisey, Consumer Horticulture Agent, Milwaukee County UW-Extension, for a talk and tour that focuses on trees in the winter landscape. The tour will begin on the patio, where your guide will lead you on a walk that loops around the lake where you will identify some of the unusual trees at Lynden (Shagbark Hickory, European Beech, Amelanchier or serviceberry, Bald Cypress, Dawn Redwood and more) while discussing how the texture, color and forms of trees can enhance the landscape in the winter months. Bring your questions for the tree expert!

12 NOON: TREE CLIMBING DEMO WITH DAVEY TREE
Winter Carnival sponsors Davey Tree will give a demonstration of the techniques their arborists use to climb tall trees in the winter.

12:30 PM-2:30 PM: LET'S MAKE A MOVIE WITH WES TANK
Are you the next Stanley Kubrick or Sofia Coppola? Perhaps the next Kate Winslet or Denzel Washington? Join filmmaker Wes Tank and production designer Khine Hline on a collaborative filmmaking journey where we will script and shoot a short movie on the Lynden grounds and then screen the film for all to see. Our masterpiece will be shot on the vintage Fisher Price Pixelvision camera and edited on the fly as we go, so performers will have their chance to nail it on the first take. We'll begin indoors in the conference room and move outdoors to shoot. Limited to 12 people, everyone will get a chance to contribute to the filmmaking process on whichever side of the camera they wish and no experience is required. Action!

1 PM-4 PM: DIP CANDLE MAKING
Warm up in the art studio and make candles the old-fashioned way, by dipping a string in wax. This activity is designed as a drop-in and is open to all ages (young children may need parental assistance).

1 PM-4 PM: FACE PAINTING/PHOTOBOOTH
Get your face painted by artist Ashley Janke, then step into Zach Swearingen's photobooth to take some wacky pictures. We'll be posting the photos on our Flickr.

1 PM-3 PM: CLOUD WATCHING
Artist Claire Hitchcock Tilton will be hosting Cloud Watching through the viewfinder of Forrest Myers's Quartet. The clearly defined inferred space gives us a focused frame for our gaze of the winter sky. Lay on the ground and put your eyes to the sky.

3 PM: BONFIRE
A bonfire is a natural nexus of activity: people gather for warmth and company. Ours will provide both, plus marshmallow roasting! At 3 pm Pegi Christiansen will dismantle the WINTER FOREST to burn in the bonfire.
