HOME at Lynden and Boswell Book Company present an evening with Elly Fishman, author of REFUGEE HIGH: Coming of Age in America, which chronicles a school year at Chicago's Sullivan High School, where nearly half the student body was born in another country and 70% speak a second language.
When Fishman's essay "Welcome to Refugee High," on which this book is based, was published, it became one of Chicago magazine's most read pieces of the year. It reached media outlets around the globe and inspired several short documentaries, including for Tel Aviv's i24, India's Wion TV, National Geographic, and PBS Newshour. It was named a finalist for the City Regional Magazine Award for Best Feature of 2017.
Alex Kotlowitz, author of There Are No Children Here and An American Summer, called Refugee High "A wondrous tapestry of stories, of young people looking for a home. With deep, immersive reporting, Elly Fishman pulls off a triumph of empathy. Their tales and their school speak to the best of who we are as a nation--and their struggles, their joys, their journeys will stay with you."
Elly Fishman worked as a senior editor and writer at Chicago magazine. Her features have won numerous awards including a City Regional Magazine Award for her article "Welcome to Refugee High," her first report on the students and faculty at Chicago's Roger C. Sullivan High School. Fishman currently lives in Milwaukee with her husband and their dog and teaches in the Journalism Department at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.
