Come explore and share our origin stories. 

Who are you? Why are you here? What do you want? We, as humans, are more than our birth certificates and where we work. We, as writers, are more than our rationalizations. As both humans and writers, we are all at once artists, dreamers, mythmakers, and visionaries.  In this workshop, we will explore the cultural history and importance of origin stories, as well as ideas for approaching and discovering your own.

About the Facilitator

The facilitator, Amanda Ngoho Reavey, is an adoptee born in the Philippines and raised in Milwaukee. She is the author of the award-winning poetry book, Marilyn, and earned an MFA in Writing & Poetics from Naropa University in 2014. She is the founder of Tattered Press and Restorynation, and has taught creative writing workshops in the community since 2006.

Wet felting transforms fluffy wisps of wool fibers into a durable, insulating textile. In this workshop we will use the process of wet felting to make a pair of slippers: a perfect gift for a friend (or your own feet). After we finish the design phase, prepare for an arm workout, some splashing, and some miraculous shrinking: each slipper will be reduced by a third as it becomes felt. No experience required. Aprons provided; please bring a towel and lunch.

About Claire Hitchcock Tilton

Claire Hitchcock Tilton is an artist, designer, and grower from Milwaukee. She works in many fine art and craft media from weaving and woodworking to painting and gardening. Hitchcock Tilton’s work explores the different ways the rural and urban landscapes affect her relationship to the land. She has studied weaving traditions with Navajo master craftswomen, and fibers, ceramics and woodworking at the Oregon College of Art and Craft. She received a BFA in Integrated Studio Arts from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design. Hitchcock Tilton’s time is split between managing the grounds of the Lynden Sculpture Garden and working in her Milwaukee homestead and studio.

In this workshop, you will learn to create a book the old-fashioned way, by folding paper into signatures, sewing those signatures on a sewing frame, and making a case. You'll even get to try your hand at gold tooling. You will go home with your own handmade blank book, bound in cloth and marbled paper. All materials, including paper, book cloth, hand-marbled paper, sewing supplies and adhesive, are included. Tools are provided. Participants will receive a course book with pictures and a step-by-step description.

Marbling is the ancient art of "floating" paints on a water bath, then combing and raking them into intricate patterns. In this workshop, you will learn how to apply acrylic paints to a water bath and create beautiful one-of-a-kind papers. You will go home with 12 or more of your own papers for use in your next project, from bookbinding to card making to paper crafting. Wear your "painting clothes," and consider bringing an apron.

This daylong workshop will explore easy and artful ways to apply dye to pre-hemmed silk scarves. From simple techniques such as tie-dyeing, resist and salt, to interesting ways to make marks, we’ll let ourselves be inspired by the wonderful art and nature surrounding us at Lynden.

Each student will create three wearable and uniquely painted scarves using this centuries-old painting form. No experience required, and all materials supplied. Remember: using dyes can be messy. We'll supply you with an apron, but please wear clothes that you don't mind getting stained.

Bring a bag lunch and beverages.

Leslie Perrino is an artist and "art evangelist" who loves to share the power of art and creativity with people, particularly in her beloved areas of metals and enameling. Her artwork is a quirky mix of traditional and found objects, most recently combining computer/electrical components with enamels. She is a charismatic and effective teacher who encourages skill building and exploration of the medium.

Enameling is a timeless art form that involves sifting colored glass onto a copper base and fusing it in a kiln to create shiny, colorful works of art. In this workshop, Leslie Perrino teaches the basics of enameling, covering a variety of techniques including stencils, sgraffito, threads, silver foil, screens, and decals. She will also be covering new techniques for returning students. You will complete sample pieces for practice, and can then choose from a variety of projects ranging from wearable items to small bowls. No experience required, and all materials supplied.

Poet/birder Chuck Stebelton returns to Lynden for fall bird walks, and he's brought friends! Please wear appropriate footwear and bring your binoculars if you have them; no previous birding experience required.

Chuck Stebelton is author of two full-length collections of poetry, most recently The Platformist (Cultural Society, 2012). His first book, Circulation Flowers (Tougher Disguises, 2005), was winner of the inaugural Jack Spicer Award. As a birder and Wisconsin Master Naturalist volunteer he has offered interpretive hikes for organizations including Lynden Sculpture Garden, Friends of Lorine Niedecker, and Woodland Pattern Book Center. He was Literary Program Director at Woodland Pattern from 2005 to 2017. He currently serves as Program Coordinator for Interfaith Older Adult Programs in Milwaukee and is a participant in Lynden's residency program.

On September 10, Stebelton's guest is Renato Umali, an artist, musician and educator. Umali composed the score for artist Cecelia Condit's recent two-channel video installation at Lynden, Tales of a Future Past.

On October 1, Stebelton is joined by filmmaker Portia Cobb, a current Lynden artist-in-residence, whose conceptual work, Rooted: The Storied Land, Memory, and Belonging, draws on her South Carolina roots to respond to and extend the narrative first created by Fo Wilson when she imagined a 19th-century enslaved woman and what she might collect in her living quarters.

All ages can drop into the art studio to use a collection of natural objects and hand tools to design and assemble floating sculptures. Then, we’ll take our flotilla down to the beach to set sail in Lynden's small pond.

Join Lynden naturalist Naomi Cobb to observe the emergence of toads from the ponds and the beginnings of their terrestrial lives. You'll collect samples from the pond, observe the findings, and complete your exploration with a personalized "tiny toad" journal.
