10 AM-4 PM: AFTER SCHOOL SPECIAL TAKE YOU BACK TO THE FUTURE
After School Special invite you to grab your space boots and come on out to this year's Winter Carnival. As you enter, you'll receive a sack of 10 bottle caps, carnival currency which you may use to barter your way through the carnival. Visit the Cyborg Fortune Teller's Booth, where she might tell you that you will meet the love of your life at the end of the world, or wager your bottle caps at an intergalactic carnival game to have the chance to win more bottle caps! Enter the geodesic dome made by Casey James Wilson and Matthew Jones for their collaborative project Tomorrow Never Dies, then grab a snack and hang out in Wilson and Jones's Post-Apocalyptic Chill-Zone.
10 AM-4 PM: DROP-IN ART ACTIVITIES
Warm up in the art studio as we put a futuristic spin on some time-honored crafts. From 10 am to 12:30 pm we’ll make Space-age Kaleidoscopes: explore the sculpture garden using a futuristic refraction device to see the movement of light in new ways! Build a Hikari no Hako--a Japanese light box--using cardboard tubes, mylar and tracing paper. From 12:30 pm to 4 pm we’ll be making Candle Rockets by transforming traditional dip-candles into colorful rockets!
10 AM-2 PM: ALIEN ANIMAL TRADING CARDS
Stop by the naturalist table to make an alien animal trading card based on actual Wisconsin animals! Begin by observing an array of animal parts, then use your imagination to create your own animals. Cards will be awarded power points you can compare to others at the festival.
10:30 AM: TREE WALK WITH TODD JOHNSON
Todd Johnson of Davey Tree Expert leads a talk and tour that focuses on trees in the winter landscape. The tour will begin on the patio, where your guide will lead you on a walk that loops around the lake where you will identify some of the unusual trees at Lynden (Shagbark Hickory, European Beech, Amelanchier or serviceberry, Bald Cypress, Dawn Redwood and more) while discussing how the texture, color and forms of trees can enhance the landscape in the winter months. Bring your questions for the tree expert!
11:30 AM: TREE CLIMBING DEMO WITH DAVEY TREE
Winter Carnival sponsors Davey Tree will give a demonstration of the techniques their arborists use to climb tall trees in the winter.
1:30 PM-3 PM: MARSHMALLOWS, TOOTHPICKS & BUCKMINSTER FULLER WITH APARNA DATEY
Buckminster Fuller was an innovative architect who wanted to create sustainable design solutions for global problems from housing and transportation to education and poverty. His artifact–the geodesic dome–was constructed with short struts (like toothpicks) to form an open framework of triangles or polygons. In this activity led by architect and educator Aparna Datey we will use marshmallows and toothpicks to learn about 3D shapes and forces as we build our own artifacts.
2 PM-3 PM: WINTER BUBBLES
See how much fun bubbles can be in the winter!
About the Artists
After School Special is a semi-nomadic collective that seeks community engagement with art through nontraditional exhibitions, queer events, informal classes, applicable workshops, malleable dialogue, and everything in between. The semi-impermanent members of After School Special are currently based out of a studio space in the Riverwest neighborhood of Milwaukee, WI.
As a group of working and emerging artists, we seek to support creative individuals of the same stature by providing opportunities for under recognized, socially engaged, young artists. Though focused on the local, After School Special engages art and community at a national level in hopes of becoming part of the larger cultural discussion that defines us all. We are not bound by walls, but by the value of ideas and the people behind them."
Current members:
Stephanie Lane Gage, DeAnn Guenterberg, Rachel Hausmann, Zach Hill, Elaina Johann, Kayle Karbowski, Krister Larson, and Jasmine McMasters.
Matthew Jones is a multidisciplinary artist based out of Cincinnati OH. He is completing his MFA in Sculpture from DAAP at the University of Cincinnati, where his current works explore the correlation between material culture and craft in the 21st century. Matthew earned his bachelors in Interior Architecture from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2009. His background in architecture and design has provided a strong foundation and influence for his studio practice.
Casey James Wilson, b. 1986, is an artist focused on the efficacy and cultural significance attributed to contemporary photographs. Wilson works in between photographic and sculptural practices, currently creating works which address digital labor, institutional architecture, and image materiality. Originally from central Texas, Casey is now based in Cincinnati, Ohio where he is finishing his MFA at the University of Cincinnati.
