About On Ocean Boulevard

The New York Times bestselling author of The Summer Guests returns at long last to her beloved Beach House series in this breathtaking novel about one family’s summer of forging new beginnings against the enduring beauty and resilience of the natural world.

It’s been sixteen years since Caretta “Cara” Rutledge has returned home to the beautiful shores of Charleston, South Carolina. Over those years, she has weathered the tides of deaths and births, struggles and joys. And now, as Cara prepares for her second wedding, her life is about to change yet again.

Meanwhile, the rest of the storied Rutledge family is also in flux. Cara’s niece Linnea returns to Sullivan’s Island to begin a new career and an unexpected relationship. Linnea’s parents, having survived bankruptcy, pin their hopes and futures on the construction of a new home on Ocean Boulevard. But as excitement over the house and wedding builds, a devastating illness strikes the family and brings plans to a screeching halt. It is under these trying circumstances that the Rutledge family must come together yet again to discover the enduring strength in love, tradition, and legacy from mother to daughter to granddaughter.

Like the sea turtles that come ashore annually on these windswept islands, three generations of the Rutledge family experience a season of return, rebirth, and growth. “Authentic, generous, and heartfelt” (New York Times bestselling author Mary Kay Andrews), On Ocean Boulevard is Mary Alice Monroe at her very best.

A Workshop with Jane Moore

janemoore_feltflower

Fee: $66/$60 members (fee includes all materials and a take-home kit with everything you need to continue making felt flowers at home).
Registration: This workshop will be rescheduled at a future date.

Wet felting is an ancient and magical hands-on fiber art process. It is also an excellent medium for exploring texture, color, and design. In this workshop, you will transform colorful, fluffy wool and silk fibers into your own uniquely designed felt flower pins. We'll use our hands and our imaginations--and a little water and soap--to create two wearable flowers. At the end of the workshop, you will receive a kit that includes everything you need to make more flowers at home.

No experience required. We have aprons, but please wear clothes suitable for artmaking.

About Jane Moore
Jane Moore is a lifelong fiber artist. In 2004 she discovered the beauty and mystery of the wet felting process, and has passionately pursued felting in her own 2-D and 3-D work. Moore's work has been featured in many galleries in the Milwaukee area. She is an active teacher in the community and has taught wet felting to students of all ages and abilities.

Rescheduled - Labyrinth Society of Lynden Sculpture Garden: Full Moon Sound Bath

Friday, May 8, 2020, 7-8 pm

fullmoonsoundbath

Fee: $20/ $15 members
Registration: This workshop will be rescheduled at a future date.

The full moon is a time for releasing and cleansing. The light of the full moon illuminates any obstacles or interferences in our lives. Once we recognize our blocks, it becomes easier to let go of what didn’t serve us in the most recent lunar phase. It is an amazing time to reevaluate and recollect.

Join Milwaukee’s own sound healer, Catherine Soteira (Cat Ries), initiated by Akhilanka of the Temple of Singing Bowls in Mysore, India, to celebrate the full moon with a healing sound bath. Sound baths are an ancient form of deep meditation; they include various ambient sounds playing in a space where you can hear and feel their vibrations.

The sound bath lasts approximately 45-60 minutes. The sound bath will be outdoors, weather permitting. Please bring a yoga mat, blanket, or towel to rest on for the duration, and dress appropriately. All are welcome to come early and walk the labyrinth while it is still light.

Rescheduled - Simple Vessels: A Ceramics Workshop with Katheryn Corbin

Saturday, April 25, 2020, 10 am-4 pm

Simple Vessels
A Ceramics Workshop with Katheryn Corbin
April 25, 2020, 10 am-4 pm

Fee: $85/$75 members (all materials included)
Registration: This workshop will be rescheduled at a future date.

Spend a day at Lynden with artist Katheryn Corbin finding your way with clay. Learn basic clay construction by forming simple vessels using traditional techniques: pinching, coiling, and smoothing. Enjoy making cups, bowls, or vases, then embellishing the surfaces with textures and surface drawings in sigelatta, a fine clay slip that is a forerunner of modern glazes. The pieces will sun dry to bring the surfaces to completion, undergo a bisque firing in our kiln, and can then be sawdust fired, replicating early wood firing. The blackened surfaces of sawdust firing result from the smoke and the clay absorbing carbon.

Bring a bag lunch and beverages and dress for studio work as well as the outdoors. We’ll be making use of Lynden’s 40 beautiful acres during our breaks, weather permitting.

The sawdust firing will be scheduled in May; attendance at the sawdust firing is voluntary, but you will need to return at a later date to pick up your pots.

About Katheryn Corbin

Katheryn Corbin is a painter, potter, and figure sculptor. She offers a series of workshops based on Native American ceramic practices. Pots and figures have both been a part of Corbin's studio practice and teaching. Drawing and painting are important elements in each discipline, and her clay pieces are informed by the complementary processes of working with clay as vessel and as figure. Corbin is interested in historical developments in clay and variations across cultures, and she often explores different firing techniques and glaze surfaces. She has taught at all levels from elementary school through adult at the Evanston Arts Center in Evanston, IL; the Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, WI; the Milwaukee Art Museum; the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design; and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her exhibition, Migrant, was on view at the Lynden Scupture Garden, February 25-May 27, 2018.
