Unique Experience of Art in Nature

This summer, the Lynden Sculpture Garden introduces new art camps for children ages 6 to 12 and a pre-college portfolio building week for young artists entering grades 9 through 12.

The two- and five-day camps integrate Lynden’s collection of monumental outdoor sculpture with the natural ecology of our 40 acres of park, ponds, and woodland, creating a unique hands-on experience of art in nature. Camps feature environmental programs, visits from exhibiting and performing artists, and the opportunity to explore a wide variety of art media in our newly renovated art studio. Each camp concludes with an informal showing for family and friends. Lynden Sculpture Garden members receive a discount on camp fees.

Summer Art Camps 2010

June 17-18
Earthworks

9 am-3 pm
Ages 7-9
$130 / $110 members
Art and nature are central to this workshop experience. Over two days we will learn about artists whose work is connected to the environment. Using the sculpture ground's natural areas, we will hunt for found materials to make earthworks sculptures.

June 21-25
Inside | Outside

9 am-3 pm
Ages 10-12
$300 / $255 members
Try your hand at a variety of media as you work from the Lynden Sculpture Garden's collection, both inside and out. Get a behind-the-scenes gallery tour from our exhibiting artists as they prepare for the opening of Inside | Outside (Sunday, June 27th). Projects include: exhibiting artist workshops, biomorphic sculptures, and a collaborative geodesic playhouse!

July 15-16
Table Top Sculptures

9 am-3 pm
Ages 10-12
$130 / $110 members
Discover book making, paper works, and origami techniques including box making, pop-up paper forms, photo transfers, and collage. Combine these projects into a unique interactive sculptural piece.

July 19-23
Imagine! Environmental Camp

9 am-12 pm
Ages 6-8
$160 / $140 members
Knowledge plus caring equals responsible choices for our environment. Learn about sustainability for our earth through environmentally based art works. Enjoy a visit from the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center's Night Owl program, a movement workshop, and lots of environmental art making.

July 26-30
Sculpture: Build Your Portfolio

9 am-4 pm
Teens (entering grades 9-12)
$325 / $280 members
Develop your portfolio through hands-on art making while learning from the garden's collection of sculptures and contemporary exhibits. Take an in-depth look into several artists from the collection, meet practicing artists, learn about sculpture conservation, and explore a variety of sculpture media in an open studio setting.

August 2-6
The Sculptor's Process

9 am-12 pm
Ages 7-9
$160 / $140 members
Put art history into practice as we take a look inside the artistic process. We will work our way through the stages, materials, and ideas artists use in creating sculpture. Progressive hands-on studio projects include Marta Pan Pond Floats, Linda Howard Photograms, and Sorel Etrog Embrace Forms.

The Lynden Sculpture Garden opens to the public on Sunday, May 30, 2010 with a Grand Opening celebration from 12 noon-5 pm. The garden, formerly known as the Bradley Sculpture Garden, is located at 2145 West Brown Deer Road, Milwaukee, WI 53217. Admission to the festivities is $5 (children under 6 free with an adult); this fee can be applied to the cost of an annual membership at the grand opening.
