nAbr Gallery: Andy Sturdevant - Gathered From Various Other Reliable Sources

February 9, 2013 - March 16, 2013

Opening: February 9, 2013, 10 am-4 pm, during Lynden’s Winter Carnival

Gathered From Various Other Reliable Sources is a project inspired by a celebrated Milwaukee cookbook, The Settlement Cook Book, first published in the early twentieth century. Assembled by German-Jewish social worker Lizzie Black Kander in 1901, the book drew on "Many Recipes Used In Settlement Cooking Classes, The Milwaukee Public School Cooking Centers and Gathered From Various Other Reliable Sources." The resulting volume simultaneously captures the domestic life and the cultural memory of a wide cross-section of Wisconsinites at the turn of the century by combining traditional and contemporary recipes in one resource.

Over the course of the exhibition, visitors to the nABr Gallery will be able to submit their own recipes. They will be categorized, cross-indexed and displayed onsite, creating surprising and unexpected connections between wildly disparate submissions. Viewed together, these recipes will provide a snapshot of the state's domestic life and cultural memory at the beginning of the 21st century.

Statement
Using a variety of tools, mediums and approaches, my work creates immersive experiences that explore history, place and memory, and often invite the viewer to take part in this experience by adding his or her own knowledge. The results of these explorations and conversations often take physical forms, in pamphlets, printed matter, photocopies, books, and drawings, often available to the viewer as takeaways. They also manifest themselves in ephemeral, site-specific performance and interactions, often in public and semi-public places.
