Meet the Artist: Brian Nigus Unveils "Sightseer"

July 20, 2014 - 3:00pm - 5:00pm

Brian Nigus - Sightseer

Free to members or with admission to the sculpture garden.

Sightseer is a portable think-space that allows its users to re-locate themselves and to practice meditative reflection in any landscape. The three large windows facilitate this contemplation of site/sight by allowing the surrounding environment to envelope the inside. Nigus built the trapezoidal cedar pod and fastened it to a double-axle trailer in 2011, and then took it on a tour of national parks. The entire structure comes to temporary rest at Lynden.

About the Artist

Brian Nigus is a Milwaukee-based artist, writer and teacher. He received his BFA in Sculpture at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 2011, completed the Studio Art program at The Burren College of Art in Ireland, apprenticed for Atelier Van Lieshout in The Netherlands, received his degree in Chinese Language Studies from the Communication University of China while also developing the Rainbow School of Art in Beijing, and was taught Tok Pisin by the Sawiyano Tribe of Papua New Guinea. Currently, he teaches and manages the sculpture lab at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. His book, Soft Feet, is a collection of travel stories and reflections that explore major questions on becoming a 21st century thinker, and how to tell the story of developing a global view. His artwork has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, including the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Center in Ireland, the 798 Art Zone in Beijing and Interview Room 11 in Edinburgh. He is guided by a conscientious social practice, and is a strong advocate for the arts, education, and traveling to new places.
