prayer flags

Free to members and with admission to the sculpture garden.

Summer is a time for celebrations and blessings of the outdoors, as longer days help our gardens grow and our flowers blossom. Artists-in-residence Pat Hidson and Tori Tasch invite you to join them periodically as they bless their surroundings by making prayers flags in the birch grove at Lynden. Hidson and Tasch are using a cyanotype process to make sun prints of plants and images from the sculpture garden (when weather permits; screen print when it doesn't), then employing transparencies and transfer processes to add text expressing their concern about the environment. The (repurposed) cloth flags are strung on a common cord and tied among the birch trees, where their colors will fade gracefully as their energy becomes a permanent part of the universe.
