Managing Trees: A Walk Around Lynden with Bob Retko and Todd Johnson

November 16, 2014 - 2:30pm - 3:30pm

Free to members or with admission to the sculpture garden.

In conjunction with our gallery exhibition, Urban Wood Encounter, Bob Retko, Lynden's senior groundskeeper, and Todd Johnson, consulting arborist at Davey Tree, will lead a tree walk that covers the history of Lynden's landscape as well as current topics in tree management. Retko, who has worked at Lynden since 1966, will begin with the development of the original 1932 Langford & Moreau landscape plan and describe how Harry Bradley and Carl Urban, Lynden's legendary gardener, built specialized tree-moving equipment and brought trees from surrounding farms. Tree management at Lynden has changed over time in response to many factors, including Dutch elm disease and a new landscape plan dating from the 1990s, and Retko will survey practices and policies from the 1960s to the present day. Johnson will focus on topics such as emerald ash borer and the control of invasive species. Bring your walking shoes and your questions.
