nAbr Gallery at Lynden

Free to members or with admission to the sculpture garden. Family passes are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

Lynden welcomes winter with a day of outdoor art-making, studio activities, tours and tree-walks, and whatever winter activities the weather permits. American Fantasy Classics are planning this year’s events, which will include the launch of a new, outdoor nAbr gallery (Ashley Janke’s curatorial project) on the grounds. Jessica Meuninck-Ganger and Nathaniel Stern will be on the premises completing an installation for their exhibition, Surfacing. The art studio will be open for wool felt marble-making in the morning and candle-making in the afternoon. Plus we'll have The Good Food Dude on hand all day, serving hot panini sandwiches, hot soup, fresh fruit smoothies, chocolate chip cookies, hot chocolate and a full espresso bar, featuring Alterra coffee!

Watch or participate on foot, skis, snowshoes or skates (bring your own).

We're beginning to fill in the details and will continue to add information below.

10 AM-2 PM: WINTER CARNIVAL GUEST ARTIST AMANDA BROWDER
American Fantasy Classics are planning this year’s events, and have invited Brooklyn-based artist Amanda Browder to Lynden to make her participatory and highly visible project involving a truck and many yards of fabric, Chromatic Hi-Five (see a previous iteration here). Browder describes Chromatic Hi-Five as an op-art starburst-based fabric sculpture that covers a cube truck, made from community donated and locally-sourced recycled fabric—think three dimensional quilt. We will host a Sewing Day at Lynden on Friday, February 8, to prepare for the project, and you will be able to participate in its assembly during the carnival.

Born in Missoula, MT in 1976, Amanda Browder currently lives in Brooklyn, NY. She received her MFA/MA from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 2001, and taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 2001-07. Browder received a Chicago Community Arts Assistant Program Grant in 2006 and 2007. She has exhibited at the Nakaochiai Gallery, Tokyo, Japan; Lothringer 14, Munich, Germany; White Columns, New York; Mixture Contemporary Gallery, Houston, TX; The Missoula Museum of the Arts, Missoula, MT; Gallery 400-UIC, and The Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago; Future Phenomena, Brooklyn; SWAB Art Fair, Barcelona; and the Dumbo Arts Festival, Brooklyn, among others. Chromatic Hi-Five was first presented at the Nuit Blanche Public Arts Festival/LEITMOTIF in Toronto, Canada and reappeared at Reverse Space in Brooklyn. Browder is also a founding member of the art-podcast www.badatsports.com.

ALL DAY: nAbr GALLERY@LYNDEN OPENS WITH ARTIST ANDY STURDEVANT
Lynden Sculpture Garden Artist-in-Residence Ashley Janke inaugurates her outdoor nAbr Gallery—a micro-venue on the Lynden grounds--with Gathered From Various Other Reliable Sources, a project of Minneapolis-based artist Andy Sturdevant. The project references Lizzie Black Kander’s Settlement Cook Book, published in Milwaukee at the start of the 20th century. The book brought together traditional recipes—brought from many old countries—and the recipes of the new world. In Gathered From Various Other Reliable Sources, Sturdevant reinvestigates the intersection of cultural memory and contemporary domesticity a century later by collecting and classifying your recipes onsite and online.

Bring your recipes to the Winter Carnival and meet Andy Sturdevant, taste his soup, and sample bread made by Ashley Janke from her grandmother’s recipe. Or submit them online right now!

ALL DAY: SURFACING: JESSICA MEUNINCK-GANGER AND NATHANIEL STERN ONSITE
Jessica Meuninck-Ganger and Nathaniel Stern will be onsite creating a new installation in the porch windows at Lynden that continues their exploration of surfaces, layers, membranes, matrices and the physical relationship between viewer and object. The installation is part of Surfacing, their collaborative exhibition at Lynden.

ALL DAY: CHIPS ONSITE AT LYNDEN
CHIPS is a talk show made in Milwaukee by and for cultural producers and their supporters. CHIPS documents local contemporary events, people, and institutions through interviews, group discussions, and offsite analysis. For the Winter Carnival, CHIPS will screen its most recent episode featuring an in-studio interview with Sara Krajewski about her plans for Inova; an offsite interview with Tony Matelli about his show at The Green Gallery; a roundtable discussion with Paul Druecke, Richard Galling and Kim Miller facilitated by James Pederson; and a sneak preview of our interview with Amanda Browder about her influence on Bad at Sports (a contemporary art podcast).

ALL DAY: WINTER SCAVENGER HUNT
Jenna Knapp, our summer camp assistant, has devised a fiendishly fun scavenger hunt suitable for all ages. Start at the house, where you will create a team name and receive your first clue. Then off you go around the garden, exploring sculptures, circumambulating the ponds, ducking behind trees. Jenna promises us that many surprises await, and that every team that finishes will receive a prize.

ALL DAY: STUDIO ART ACTIVITIES
These activities are designed as drop-ins and are open to all ages (young children may need parental assistance).

10 am–1 pm: Wool Felt Marbles
We’ll use natural wool from Hillspring Eco-Farm, a local organic farm to wind wisps of fibers into natural felt marbles. This simple process creates felt marbles that can be used for games, threaded into a necklace, or massed in a handmade garland.

1-4 pm: Dip Candles
Make candles the old-fashioned way, by dipping a string in wax.

ALL DAY: PARACHUTE GAMES
American Fantasy Classics will host a series of games and activities with handmade parachutes throughout the day.

12 NOON: TREE WALK WITH SHARON MORRISEY

Join Sharon Morrisey, Consumer Horticulture Agent
Milwaukee County UW-Extension, for a talk and tour that focuses on trees in the winter landscape. The tour will begin on the patio, where your guide will lead you on a walk that loops around the lake where you will identify some of the unusual trees at Lynden (Shagbark Hickory, European Beech, Amelanchier or serviceberry, Bald Cypress, Dawn Redwood and more) while discussing how the texture, color and forms of trees can enhance the landscape in the winter months. Bring your questions for the tree expert!
