Summer Art Camps 2011

This summer, the Lynden Sculpture Garden invites children ages 6 to 14 for a distinctive art experience. Lynden’s two- and five-day camps integrate our collection of monumental outdoor sculpture with the natural ecology of 40 acres of park, ponds, and woodland, creating a unique hands-on experience of art in nature. Camps feature environmental programs, visiting artists, and the opportunity to explore a wide variety of art media in our art studio. Each camp concludes with an informal showing for family and friends.

Join us for a summer of art in nature!

$270/$225 members
Art and nature are central to this week-long workshop experience inspired by artists whose work is connected to the environment. We will hunt for materials to make earthworks sculptures in Lynden’s natural areas, weave willow reed baskets, and make handmade paper from pond algae.

Art | Elements

July 18-22 | 9 am-12 pm
Ages 6-8

Knowledge plus caring equals responsible choices for our environment. Learn about sustainability through environmentally-based art projects. Earth, fire, wind, and water: each day we will interpret a new element through an art activity.

Puppets: From Rags to Revue

with Sally Duback
July 25-29 | 9 am – 12 pm
Ages: 8-12
$140/$120 members
Join Teaching Artist-in-Residence Sally Duback for a puppetry workshop that begins with rags and ends with a revue. We will start with pieces of worn cloth and natural materials gathered at Lynden, then grind the pulp in a Hollander beater. We’ll use the pulp to create original puppets. As the week progresses and you develop your puppet’s character, we will work together on a script that incorporates everyone’s creations. The camp finishes with a puppet play, performed for family and friends.

The Sculptor’s Process

August 1-2 | 9 am-3 pm
Ages 7-9
$110/$90 members
Designed for the budding sculptor, this camp takes a look inside the artistic process. Using Lynden’s sculpture collection, we will explore the methods, materials, and ideas artists use to create sculpture. Hands-on studio projects are inspired by Henry Moore’s mold making and casting, the design of Marta Pan’s floating sculpture, and Deborah Butterfield’s use of natural materials.
