Past Classes

Winter 2013 Classes

The Lynden Sculpture Garden offers studio classes for young people in eight-week sessions from September through May. These classes focus on three-dimensional artmaking--though we will also do plenty of painting, drawing and collaging--and make use of Lynden’s special resources: the collection of monumental sculpture and 40 acres of park, lake and woodland. Taught by experienced art educators, classes combine creative expression with an age-appropriate understanding of media, processes and techniques.

This winter we add a four-week session of special offerings:

  • an art class for young children taught in French (a collaboration with Alliance Francaise)
  • Saturdays in the Trees, a class that integrates ecology and art. Naturalist Naomi Cobb will create a joyful experience outside—using the entire grounds--while leading children in an exploration of different ecosystems and inspiring them to see the winter beauty that surrounds us.

Explorers’ Studio: Environments
Tuesdays, 4-5:30 pm
Ages 6-9
$138 / $114 members
Young artists are inherently motivated to engage in self-directed exploration. This class introduces a new range of materials, processes, and tools, then asks students to apply them to our session theme--environments. Emphasizing freedom to explore processes and materials, we’ll work on projects individually and as a team. We will be carving buckthorn walking sticks, integrating sound into sculptures, and investigating scale with miniature sculpture garden terrariums.

Toyshop
Wednesdays, 1:15-2:15 pm
Ages 4-5
$92 / $76 members
Harking back to a simpler era of handmade games and toys, we will use clay, paint and mixed media to make our own three-dimensional diversions--guaranteed to cure the winter homebound blues.

Sculpture: Materials and Processes
Thursdays, 4-5:30 pm
Ages: 8-12
$138 / $114 members
The process of making sculpture is a mix of creative invention and learned technique. Drawing on Lynden's collection we’ll explore the methods, materials, and ideas that artists use to create sculpture. Projects include casting candles from clay forms and felting merino wool vessels. Deepen your understanding of three-dimensional artmaking as you develop your artistic voice.

Garden Animals
Fridays, 1:15-2:15 pm
Ages: 4-5
$92 / $76 members
Taking Lynden’s collection of animal sculptures as one starting point, and stories about animals as another, we will use paint, clay and mixed media collage to explore our favorite animals.

Four-Week Winter Session

Four consecutive Saturdays
February 16-March 9, 2013

Les P’tits Artisans
In collaboration with the Alliance Franḉaise
Please note: The Alliance is handling registration for this camp. Visit http://afmilwaukee.org or call 414-431-0943 for registration and discounts.

Saturdays, 9-10 am
Ages 4-6
$75
Immerse yourself in creative projects inspired by French songs and stories—all while learning French! You will experience the French-speaking world while making new friends and acquiring new concepts about the world through language. No prior experience of French necessary, but all levels welcome.

Story Tiles for Adults
Saturdays, 10:30 am-12:30 pm
$100 / $85 members
All materials included.
Challenge yourself to tell your story in a new way--visually. Narrative art forms have been with us since people began painting in caves and pop up today in comic books and graphic novels. Ceramicist and teacher Heather Eiden invites you to hone your skills as you tell your story, storyboard it, and carve it into four unique story tiles that you’ll take home in a handmade carrying pouch at the end of four weeks. Eiden created story tiles as an interactive storytelling tool and game. All skill levels welcome. Heather will be exhibiting her story tiles as part of her Master’s thesis project at Concordia University in the spring, and invites you to exhibit your tiles alongside hers.

Saturdays in the Trees
Saturdays, 1-3 pm
Ages 8-10
$92 / $76 members
Come explore, play and build in the secret back acres of the Lynden Sculpture Garden with naturalist Naomi Cobb. Find evidence of the animals that hide out in the garden’s woods, observe how they survive winter, build your own shelter and sculpt your own woodland animal. On extra cold days we can snuggle in to hear traditional stories about winter and bring our artmaking inside. Special snow activities are possible!

Watch our calendar for weekend family workshops and adult workshops throughout the year.

Friends and family are invited on the final Saturday to watch as we test our coracles’ seaworthiness in a voyage across the small pond.

This is a collaborative workshop, with each parent/child team building their own coracle. Much of the work will be done outside (weather permitting).
