Spring 2012 Studio Classes
The Lynden Sculpture Garden offers studio classes for young people in eight-week sessions from September through May. These classes focus on three-dimensional artmaking-- though we will also do plenty of painting, drawing and collaging--and make use of Lynden’s special resources: the collection of monumental sculpture and 40 acres of park, lake and woodland. Taught by experienced art educators, classes combine creative expression with an age-appropriate understanding of media, processes and techniques.
New this semester!
- We introduce our first Saturday workshop series, Coracle Craft: A Boat Building Workshop, which will meet four consecutive Saturdays beginning April 28.
- Alliance Française offers Les Amis Débutants, an introductory French class for children on Tuesday afternoons.

Make It New
Tuesdays, 4-5:30 pm
Ages: 6-9
$138 / $114 members
We are surrounded by everyday items we no longer use. Employing a variety of processes, we will transform these abandoned objects into functional sculptures—things we can use. Cast reclaimed crayons into sculptures you can draw with, design assemblages that double as lampshades, and make pop-up artist books with pull-strip animations from found papers. With a focus on creative, open-ended design, this class inspires the maker within.
Garden Animals
Thursdays, 1:15-2:15 pm
Ages: 3-5
$92 / $76 members
Taking Lynden’s collection of animal sculptures as one starting point, and stories about animals as another, we will use paint, clay and mixed media collage to explore our favorite animals.
Sculptor’s Process III
Thursdays, 4-5:30 pm
Ages: 9-12
$138 / $114 members
The process of making sculpture is a mix of creative invention and learned technique. Drawing on Lynden's collection we’ll explore the methods, materials, and ideas that artists use to create sculpture. Projects include sculpting clay forms for casting wax candles and making felted wool vessels. Deepen your understanding of three-dimensional artmaking as you develop your artistic voice. (New students welcome--previous Sculptor’s Process classes are not a prerequisite for this class.)
Saturday Workshop
Coracle Craft: A Boat Building Workshop
4 Saturdays, April 28 - May 19
9 am-12 noon
Ages: 9-14
$150 / $135 members
The coracle is a lightweight, shallow-draft fishing boat that floats on the water like a cork. Join us this spring for an outdoor adventure as we use the materials at hand and traditional construction methods (the coracle dates back thousands of years) to make our own coracle: weaving a willow frame, skinning the boat with canvas, and carving a paddle. Friends and family are invited on the final Saturday to watch as we test the coracle’s seaworthiness in a voyage across the small pond.
This is a collaborative workshop, with all participants working together to build a single coracle, and will be limited to five participants. The coracle will remain on view at Lynden during the summer. Much of the work will be done outside (weather permitting).
Alliance Française at Lynden
Les Amis Débutants
Tuesdays, 4-5 pm
Ages 7-12
$135
Visit http://afmilwaukee.org or call 414-431-0943 for registration and discounts; registration opens at the end of February for the spring session.
Children who are new to French will learn basic vocabulary and expressions through a variety of activities that will introduce them to the cultures of the French-speaking world. After this course, children will be ready to integrate into other children’s courses at the Alliance Française.
