Free Family Day

July 24, 2016 - 10:00am - 4:00pm

Free.

Transportation: We will be running a free shuttle bus between the garden and the Park & Ride west of I-43 at the Brown Deer exit beginning at 10:00 am. The Lynden parking lot will be reserved for bus drop-off and drivers with disabilities. If you are a community group organizing a bus trip to Lynden, you will be able to drop passengers at Lynden and lay over in the Park & Ride. For information on bus subsidies for groups organizing their own transport, contact Anna Grosch.

Lynden opens its doors to the community for a midsummer Free Family Day. Pack a picnic and spend the day sampling hands-on art and nature activities, or simply strolling the grounds.

Schedule

Activities run all day unless otherwise noted.

Resource Table: Check out Family Discovery Kits & Guides, Plein-Air Painting Boxes, Artist-Designed Maps, and Artist-in-Residence Sara Caron's Play Picnic Sets

Seed Bomb Sculptures: From Our Garden to Yours: Shape paper pulp infused with Lynden's native prairie grass and marigold seeds into cups. Once dry, they can be placed in your garden to slowly decompose, releasing the seeds into the soil.

In the Garden: Wall Drawing with Katheryn Corbin: Artist-in-residence Katheryn Corbin invites you into her studio to help her make a wall drawing. Imagine yourself, your family, and your friends in the Lynden Sculpture Garden by adding them to this very large drawing.

Felt Vessels: Wind natural wool from Hillspring Eco-Farm, a local organic grower, into small felt vessels. This simple process creates felt forms that are both decorative and functional. Embellish your finished vessel with colorful embroidery.

Tree Scavenger Hunt: Follow clues to locate, and learn about, significant trees at Lynden.

Garden Mandala Stones: Explore Lynden's pollinator garden and then paint a rock in bright colors to attract butterflies to your garden at home.

Pond Bingo: Fill up your bingo card as you identify the plants and insects near Lynden's pond, then catch a frog or turtle for our aquarium. When the tank is
full of our pond discoveries, you will make a drawing of your creature to take home.

Pond Critter Watercolor: Learn about some of the creatures that live in Lynden's ponds--and then paint them.

Story Time in the Garden: Enjoy a story for the very young under the trees (stories begin at 11:30 am and 2 pm).
